Vital Records has death records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). Death records are also available from the local Registrar of Vital Statistics where the event occurred. Requirements

New York State Death Records New York began statewide registration of births, marriages, and deaths ("vital records") in 1880-81, under supervision of the State and local boards of health. Compliance with the law was incomplete until 1913 or even later; therefore certificates are lacking for many events.

Death records are managed by the Vital Records Section of New York Department of Health for most of the state from 1881 to present. New York State briefly kept death records from 1847 to about 1850 and started recording deaths again in June 1880. Copies of all records can obtained from either the village, town, or city of death or by contacting the state archives. New York City keeps death records separately from New York State.

If the cause is or manner is “Undetermined” or “Pending further study,” contact the Medical Examiner’s office directly at (212) 447-2030. You can also order a copy of a death certificate by completing the death certificate application (PDF) and leaving box #20 blank.
